Our clinical component is designed to equip you with the skills you need to work in a variety of settings with clients of various ages. You will work closely with placement specialists to find and secure approved local sites within Emerson’s national partner network.
As a Speech@Emerson student, you will begin your clinical experience with one virtual placement, using simulated cases and video recordings from our on-campus training facility. Following successful completion of the virtual placement, you will complete in-person clinical placements at sites within 75 miles of your home.
During your clinical placements, you will:
Grow your practical understanding of communication disorders that affect speech, language, literacy, social skills, cognition, and swallowing in clients of various ages;
Gain exposure to clinical settings such as early intervention programs, public and private schools, private practices, and acute care and rehabilitation hospitals;
Learn professional collaboration and counseling skills, and how best to evaluate and treat diverse clients; and
Apply evidence-based concepts learned in class in real-world settings, working directly with clients.
